Their story
On October 9, 1944, near La Forge, France, First Lieutenant Kandle led a small force through difficult terrain to attack a strongly defended German position that had halted his battalion's advance for two days, personally leading assaults that resulted in the capture or killing of numerous enemy soldiers and the destruction of three strongpoints. For this gallantry he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. He was killed in action on December 31, 1944.
