Their story
Pauline Hildreth Field was an American Red Cross worker who served as directrice (director) of the Red Cross canteen at Dijon, France, during World War I, having arrived in France in the summer of 1918. She died on 24 March 1919 at the American convalescent hospital at Savenay, near St. Nazaire; her National Archives burial card notes death as the result of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, though contemporary newspapers reported it as an accident. She is buried at Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Plot A, Row 32, Grave 24.
