Their story
Frederick Schiller Faust, best known by the pen name Max Brand, was a prolific American author who volunteered as a war correspondent for Harper's Magazine during World War II. On May 12, 1944, while accompanying American infantry during the Battle of Santa Maria Infante near Minturno in Lazio, Italy, he was mortally wounded by shrapnel and died, reportedly telling medics to treat younger wounded soldiers first. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
