Their story
Helen Fairchild was a U.S. Army nurse with Base Hospital No. 10 who volunteered for frontline duty at British Casualty Clearing Station No. 4 during the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917, treating casualties near the front and enduring mustard gas exposure. She died on January 18, 1918, from complications following surgery for a gastric ulcer, her condition believed worsened by that gas exposure. She was first buried at Le Treport and later reinterred at the Somme American Cemetery in Bony, France.
