Their story
Gladys Cromwell was an American poet who served with her twin sister Dorothy as a Red Cross canteen worker and nurse near the front at Chalons-sur-Marne and Verdun during World War I. Both sisters received the French Croix de Guerre for their service. Profoundly affected by the horrors of war, the twins died by suicide, jumping overboard from the liner La Lorraine on January 19, 1919, while returning to the United States; they were buried side by side at Suresnes American Cemetery with full military honors.
