Their story
Jimmy Butler, a former 1930s Hollywood child actor (Only Yesterday, No Greater Glory, Manhattan Melodrama), served as a Private in A Battery, 882nd Field Artillery Battalion, 70th Infantry Division. On 18 February 1945, during the attack on Kerbach near Théding, France, he took over a radio when the operator became ill and, under enemy mortar and automatic-weapons fire, left a covered observation post to adjust artillery fire supporting advancing infantry, falling mortally wounded. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
