Their story
During the St. Mihiel offensive near Limey, France, on September 12, 1918, Wickersham was severely wounded in four places by an exploding shell. Before accepting aid for himself, he dressed the wounds of his orderly, then continued to lead and advance his platoon, firing his pistol with his left hand, until he collapsed and died from loss of blood. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and is the only Medal of Honor recipient buried at St. Mihiel American Cemetery.
