Their story
Captain Henry T. Waskow commanded B Company, 1st Battalion, 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, and was killed by shell fragmentation during the assault on the hills above San Pietro Infine, Italy, on December 14, 1943. His death was immortalized in war correspondent Ernie Pyle's famous column "The Death of Captain Waskow." Per his own wishes, his remains were buried overseas in Italy rather than repatriated; a memorial marker in North Belton Cemetery, Texas, is a cenotaph only.
