Their story
As a First Lieutenant in the 4th U.S. Infantry, Van Schaick was awarded the Medal of Honor for action near Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippine Islands, on November 23, 1901, when, as the first of his detachment to emerge from a canyon during the pursuit of insurgents, he galloped forward and closed with a column of enemy, throwing them into confusion and preventing them from attacking his men as they emerged one by one. He later served as a Colonel in World War II, was captured by Japanese forces, and died as a prisoner at Baguio, Philippines, on February 14, 1945.
