Their story

Lattie Tipton, a 33-year-old from Tennessee and the close friend of Audie Murphy, served as a Private First Class in the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. On August 15, 1944, during Operation Dragoon near Ramatuelle in southern France, he was shot and killed when he exposed himself to accept what turned out to be a false German flag of surrender; his death prompted Murphy's actions that earned the Distinguished Service Cross.
