Their story
James Edwin Slaughter (born June 1827, Culpeper County, Virginia) was a Brigadier General in the Confederate States Army who commanded Confederate forces at the Battle of Palmito Ranch in Texas on May 13, 1865, the last land battle of the American Civil War. After the war he fled to Mexico and worked as a civil engineer; while visiting Mexico City he contracted pneumonia and died on January 1, 1901. A veteran of the Mexican-American War, he was interred at the Mexico City National Cemetery, making him the highest-ranking Confederate buried there.
