Their story
Maj. Gen. Maurice Rose commanded the U.S. 3rd Armored Division across France, Belgium, and into Germany during World War II. On March 30, 1945, near Paderborn, Germany, his jeep was cut off by German tanks of SS Brigade Westfalen; a tank commander opened fire and Rose was struck fatally in the head, making him the highest-ranking American killed by enemy fire in the European Theater of Operations. He is buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten.
