Their story
Paul Cody Bentley, a Harvard Class of 1917 graduate from Chicago, joined the American Field Service as an ambulance driver after an eye condition kept him out of the U.S. Army, serving with Section 65 at the front in 1917. He was wounded by shellfire while evacuating casualties on the Chemin des Dames in September 1917 and died of his wounds in a French hospital on September 16, 1917, earning the French Croix de Guerre for his courage. He was the son of Josephine L. Bentley, the ABMC's first female commissioner.
