Their story
First Lieutenant George Orrin Middleditch, a U.S. Army Air Service pilot training with the Royal Flying Corps in England, was killed on March 12, 1918, when his DH.4 aircraft stalled and crashed during a climbing turn near Scampton, Lincolnshire. Initially buried in Newport Cemetery, Lincoln, he was later reinterred at Brookwood American Cemetery in Surrey; a separate cenotaph marker stands in Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit, but his remains were not repatriated.
