Their story
Second Lieutenant Loring served with the 115th Machine Gun Battalion, 30th Division, A.E.F., near Ypres (Kemmel), Belgium. When his gun positions were rendered untenable by shell fire and his men were ordered to seek shelter in dugouts, he left a place of safety to ensure all his men were under cover and was mortally wounded by a shell, dying on his way to the hospital. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously.
